Conquer the Stretton Summits Round: A Walk to Remember in the Shropshire Hills

Published on Friday April 18th, 2025

If you’re searching for a walking challenge that captures the wild beauty of the Shropshire Hills and brings you face-to-face with breathtaking views, ancient landscapes, and heart-pumping climbs — look no further than the Stretton Summits Round.

This circular route, devised by the team at The Outdoor Depot in Church Stretton, is a local favourite that showcases the best of the surrounding hills, all from the convenience of one of Shropshire’s most charming market towns. It’s a fantastic challenge for seasoned walkers or adventurous visitors looking to see the hills from every angle.

What Is the Stretton Summits Round?

This rewarding route covers around 21km (13 miles) and includes over 1,000m of ascent, taking in five major summits that encircle the town:

  • Ragleth Hill – Your first climb is a steep one, with fantastic views over the town and Longmynd ridge.

  • Caer Caradoc – Rich in legend and dramatic views, it’s believed to be the site of Caractacus’ last stand against the Romans.

  • Hope Bowdler Hill – Often overlooked but offering a peaceful detour with panoramic scenery.

  • The Lawley – A graceful ridge walk with sweeping views to the north and west.

  • Longmynd (Pole Bank) – The highest point on the walk and the perfect spot to pause and soak it all in.

Each summit offers a unique perspective of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — from rugged ridge walks to open moorland, ancient hillforts, and quiet sheep-dotted pastures.

Starting Point: Church Stretton

The route begins and ends in Church Stretton, often referred to as “Little Switzerland” for its dramatic landscape. With a range of shops, cafés, and places to rest your feet (like The Outdoor Depot itself for gear and advice), it’s the perfect base for your adventure.

Planning Your Walk

This is a full day hike for fit and confident walkers. Good footwear, layers, and plenty of water are essential — as is a good map or GPS route. While you’ll pass through remote terrain, the walk is never far from Church Stretton should you need to cut it short.

For those not up for the full round, each hill is a brilliant walk in its own right — making it easy to break the route into smaller chunks for weekend explorations.

Why Walk It?

Whether you’re ticking off summits, training for a bigger challenge, or just here to immerse yourself in Shropshire’s spectacular scenery, the Stretton Summits Round offers an unforgettable day out in the hills. You’ll leave with tired legs, full lungs, and a head full of views you’ll want to return to again and again.
