Tanners Wines

William Tanner, born in Shropshire in 1839, went to sea and sailed the world, visiting places as far flung as Australia and Chile. Returning as a ship’s captain in 1872, he took his brother Henry into partnership and founded the firm of W. & H. E. Tanner in Shrewsbury. Its cellars were those of the now demolished Victorian Market Hall, its offices were in Shoplatch.

Tanners Wines is one of the UK’s leading Independent Wine Merchants, delivering a fine collection of wines & spirits all over the country. Family-owned, family-run and resolutely independent.

Independent family shippers of estate wines. Established 1842

The Cellars Shop

Round the back of our Shrewsbury headquarters, and with masses of parking, the Cellars Shop is the flagship of Tanners’ retail operations.
You will find the full Tanners range of wines and spirits superbly displayed, together with hundreds of fine and rare ‘Oddment’ wines. In all, that makes well over 2,000 wines, but if you find the choice daunting Robert Crosland and his team will give you honest, practical guidance.

Usual hours: Monday to Saturday 9am-6pm except bank holidays.

A Taste of Tanners

Relax and unwind in our recently re-launched A Taste of Tanners Wine & Tapas bar, conveniently located on Wyle Cop, within a five minute walk of Shrewsbury’s bustling high street. With the option of sitting in our cosy, newly-refurbished indoor snug or charming, secluded courtyard, wines are available by the glass or by the bottle and can be accompanied by a selection of small plates, brimming with charcuterie, cheese and nibbles. We have a selection of wines from lesser-known, up-and-coming regions, alongside the classics, predominantly from small growers and winemakers with a sustainably focused outlook. These are available to enjoy on the premises by the glass or bottle, or to take away. To pair with our Spanish-style cuisine, the drinks menu also includes a selection of sherries by the glass, along with local craft beers and soft drinks, with daily and monthly specials. Natasha Ward and the team will be on hand, whether it’s a weekday glass of wine after work or a Saturday afternoon gathering with friends you are enjoying.

A Taste of Tanners usual hours: Wednesday to Friday 12-3pm and 5-8pm. Saturday 12-8pm.
Closed for Bank Holidays.

"🏰✨ Dive into the heart of Shrewsbury's Castle Quarter – the epicenter of history and grandeur! 🏰 Home to four of the town's largest historic treasures – Shrewsbury Castle, Library, Prison, and Train Station.

Did you know Shrewsbury Castle's foundations were laid in 1083 by the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery?
Montgomery, a cousin of William the Conqueror, earned this castle and more as a thank-you for his aid during the Norman conquest.

From royal stronghold to a 16th-century transformation, Shrewsbury Castle has quite the story. Now, it stands majestically, housing the Shropshire Regimental Museum. 👑🏰 Ready to step into the pages of history?
