Whittington Castle

Welcome to Whittington Castle

Welcome to Whittington Castle near Oswestry in Shropshire England. The strikingly picturesque and romantic ruins are steeped in much history, tales of bitter border warfare, romance and legend.

A small rural community in North Shropshire, England acquired a 99-year lease to manage the Castle that sits in the centre of its village. In 2007 The Trust re-opened the Castle to visitors after a restoration with the assistance of a £950k grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Tearoom & Bookshop

Why not have a cup of tea or a piece of cake in the Castle Tearoom.  Freshly prepared sandwiches, warming soups, ice-cream.  Morning coffee or Afternoon tea from toasted teacakes to muffins to milkshakes.  Great value for money and the ideal stopping off place.

Castle Opening Times

Grounds always open
Tea Room open: 10am-4pm, Wednesday to Sunday all year & Bank Holiday Mondays

"🏰✨ Dive into the heart of Shrewsbury's Castle Quarter – the epicenter of history and grandeur! 🏰 Home to four of the town's largest historic treasures – Shrewsbury Castle, Library, Prison, and Train Station.

Did you know Shrewsbury Castle's foundations were laid in 1083 by the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery?
Montgomery, a cousin of William the Conqueror, earned this castle and more as a thank-you for his aid during the Norman conquest.

From royal stronghold to a 16th-century transformation, Shrewsbury Castle has quite the story. Now, it stands majestically, housing the Shropshire Regimental Museum. 👑🏰 Ready to step into the pages of history?
