Explore Shrewsbury Prison
Where you can find us
Shrewsbury Prison is a recently (2013) decommissioned Victorian jail where you can walk in the footsteps of our social history and listen whilst a Prison Officer shines a light on what life was like for both the incarcerated and those who guarded them through the ages.
The huge four acre site is open to explore and you can visit and experience amongst others, the original Victorian cells including those used for segregation, the exercise yards, the execution room and reception, where prisoners were processed as they arrived in jail.
This is an immersive experience without gizmos or gimmicks – the jail is very much as it was when the last prisoners left in 2013.
Shrewsbury Prison is recognised (BBC Radio 4) as 6th in the Best Dark Tourism sites in the World to visit alongside Auschwitz, Ground Zero and Chernobyl – the only UK location to feature.
